Srisailam Quartzite Fm base reconstruction

Srisailam Quartzite Fm

Period:
Ectasian, Calymmian

Age Interval:
latest Calymmian to Middle Ectasian

Province:
Proterozoic S.India – Cuddapah basin

Type Locality and Naming

Lithology and Thickness

Sandstone: Pebbly grit, quartzite, heterolithic shale –sandstone. Plateau-forming.

Lithology Pattern:
Coarse-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformity spanning over 200 Myr onto Cumbum Fm of Nallamalai Gr

Upper contact

Kimberlite pipe Fm erupted into it with age of 1090 Ma; then an unconformity below the Banganapalli Quartzite Fm of the Kurnool Gr.

Regional extent

The Srisailam Quartzite Fm crops out in the north of the Cuddapah basin and nonconformably overlies the Eastern Dharwar Province to its northwest. The plateau forming Srisailam Quartzite separates the Kurnool and Palnad sub-basins. It is overthrust by the Nallamallai Gr to the southeast and is unconformably overlain by the Kurnool Group to its south and north. The relationship between it and the Papaghni Gr and Chitravati Gr is unknown

Age

Arbitrary put here as beginning at ca. 1450 Ma, and ending at 1300 – assuming sands are coeval with basal sands of correlated groups in other basins as shown on Saha et al. (2016) chart. Detrital zircons within the extensive arenites of the Srisailam Fm yield a Maximum depositional age of 1787 +/-22 Ma that is confirmed and slightly better constrained by five detrital muscovite 40Ar-39Ar total fusion ages that yielded a mean of 1773 +/-18 Ma.
